Dr. Holiday at podium and Dr. Sellers J. Parker (right) at University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in Pine Bluff, Jefferson County, Arkansas. Born in Wabash, Phillips County, Arkansas in 1911, Parker was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Zack Parker. He received a B.S. in general agriculture at Arkansas Agricultural, Mechanical and Normal College (A.M. & N., later called University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff- U.A.P.B.) in Pine Bluff, Jefferson County, Arkansas in 1939, a master's degree (1945) and a doctorate (1949) from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He was a professor of horticulture in the Agriculture Department at U.A.P.B. for 30 years until he retired in 1982. Parker served as the Soil Conservation Service liaison officer to approximately 15 historically black 1890 Land Grant Colleges from 1985 until his death. In 1987, Parker died in Pine Bluff at the age of 75.

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff was created by an act of the State Legislature in 1873 as a land grant institution for blacks. The Branch Normal College opened 27 Sept. 1875 with seven students and Joseph Carter Corbin as professor. Ten baccalaureate degrees were awarded from 1882 to 1894.
